In order to better fund these events, TLA spun them off in August, 2001 and created the non-profit Philadelphia Film Society. In 2002, with a larger staff and more venues, the Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema soared to an attendance figure in excess of 45,000, up from 17,000 in 2000 and now exceeds 65,000 attendees.
